Blackmores Sydney Marathon, part of the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival, now has an extended course cut-off time of six hours, allowing more time for runners to complete their marathon. This new course extension makes the Blackmores Sydney Marathon more accessible for first time marathon runners and for those who like to take their marathon at a more leisurely pace.
Blackmores Sydney Running Festival Race Director Wayne Larden said the extension is a great boost to the event.
“The Blackmores Sydney Marathon is a spectacular course that takes in many of Sydney’s iconic sights including the only chance to cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge traffic free, the Royal Botanic Garden, Darling Harbour, The Rocks, Hyde Park and finishing at the Sydney Opera House,” said Mr Larden.
“The extension of the cut-off time to six hours makes the Blackmores Sydney Marathon more achievable for first time marathon participants.
“The Blackmores Sydney Running Festival has raised over $10million since the event started in 2001 - our marathon runners make a large contribution to the event’s fundraising effort and we hope to grow that fundraising effort further with the introduction of more first timers taking on this challenging distance and being sponsored for their efforts’.
The Blackmore’s Sydney Running festival is supported by The NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.
Destination NSW CEO, Sandra Chipchase, said it was fantastic to see that more participants can now enjoy taking part in the marathon which will showcase Sydney in all of its glory.
“The extension, along with the news that the Blackmores Sydney Marathon will be broadcast live across Australia on Channel 10 and Eurosport Asia, will position the Blackmores Sydney Marathon as a major international marathon alongside Boston, New York and London and will attract more interstate and international participants,” Ms Chipchase said.
“The Sydney Running Festival is one of the world's most scenic running events, taking in some of Sydney's most spectacular and historic landmarks.”
“Marathons are drawcard events throughout the world. We anticipate that by increasing the time participants have to finish the Sydney Marathon, organisers will attract more international, inter and intrastate participants.”
